Japan, October 2007:
11th Annual International Conference on Human-Animal Interactions

The International Association of Human-Animal Interaction Organizations (IAHAIO) was founded in 1990 to gather together national associations and related organizations interested in advancing the understanding and appreciation of the link between animals and humans.

Every three years, IAHAIO sponsors a competition to recognize the work of a public or private organization to integrate pets in cities. Entrants are judged on the basis of their success in implementing innovative programs to facilitate harmonious coexistence between people and companion animals in an urban environment. The IAHAIO Pets in Cities Award, which started in 1992, is presented during IAHAIO's International Conference on Human-Animal Interactions. The next IAHAIO conference will be in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on September 13-15, 2001.

Purpose

To recognize the outstanding work of a public or private organization (i.e. city council, housing authority, city planning group, architectural firm, voluntary organization) in implementing innovative programs to facilitate a harmonious coexistence between people and companion animals in an urban environment.

Funding

The IAHAIO Pets in Cities Award is entirely funded by the French Association for Information and Research on Companion Animals (AFIRAC). Since 1977, AFIRAC has sought to promote integration of companion animals in cities by encouraging innovative, comprehensive approaches and in-depth strategies.

Nominations

Nominations can be submitted in any of four categories:

  1. A comprehensive program implemented by any type of authority or community to ease and/or promote the integration of companion animals in the urban structure, so that companion animals fit successfully into cities.
  2. An innovative study or initiative in a technical field that has facilitated the inclusion of pets in cities (e.g., technical equipment or facilities that improve the quality of life for both people and animals.)
  3. A state-of-the-art educational campaign to improve the behavior of owners, future owners or non-owners (e.g., school or youth-oriented programs, city campaigns, or initiatives by veterinary institutions).
  4. Programs in schools, universities or on-the-job training devised to enable future or current decision-makers to understand the benefits of urban pets and to develop positive, comprehensive approaches to urban animals, rather than solve isolated problems one at a time.

  • Degree to which the values of originality, relevance, and community involvement are reflected in the method of implementation.
  • Cost effectiveness.
  • Degree of integration within a broader project.
