by Cynthia Clay, M. A.; Marriage and Family Therapist; Service Dog user 10 years. Losing your service dog is an emotionally charged experience because of your incredibly strong bond together. This wonderful animal was your constant companion for all the years you were together. The void caused by your service dog's death or retirement can be so enormous that you might need professional help. This soul helped erase the emotional and physical pain of your challenges. Your service dog could help you to do things that you could not accomplish alone. In the absence of your service dog, you might experience worsening of your emotional and physical conditions. You might feel that your own identity was linked with the beauty, physical attributes and sociability your dog provided. Grieving the loss of the body that held the soul of your beloved dog is important to being able to love your next Service Dog. If you choose to get a successor service dog, you are not replacing the memory of your previous dog. Although it is natural to make comparisons, these can make it difficult to bond with your new dog. Instead, focus on the abilities of your new dog and his or her unique characteristics. Honor your previous service dog by embracing the love and memories from that relationship, and commit to forging an equally fulfilling relationship with your new dog. |
