Animal Assisted Crisis Intervention Course

Eugene, OR
Friday thru Monday, January 25-28 2008

Learn how to provide safe, effective animal assisted crisis intervention to individuals and responders affected by life changing transitions, crisis and disaster.

This course is designed to instruct and prepare registered therapy animal teams and/or handlers without animals to respond to critical incidents, crises and disaster in their local community as well as a national disaster.

There is a mental health component and animal component which is taught in the classroom and throughout 4 days of training. The mental health is taught by a Delta Society Pet Partner and nationally certified counselor with experience in crisis intervention and disaster mental health. The animal material is taught by a Delta Society Pet Partner, licensed Instructor/Evaluator, Certified Pet Dog trainer and certified trauma and crisis responder.

The classroom instructions include animal care and stress prevention for the dog; basic crisis intervention, stress management; self care and team care tools, daily diffusing, etc.

The animal and human components are then brought together in demonstrations, role play and practice which then flows into what was learned in the two days and applying it to the 3rd day in emotional trauma simulations, local transportation and airline travel (this includes going through security and boarding a plane) The 4th day is a continuation of the simulations consisting of components that would be present at a disaster site or on the scene of a accident or tragedy such as VA Tech or the bridge collapse in Minnesota.

Participants interested in certification will be assessed for their present level of skills and aptitude for crisis response throughout the 4 day training .
